The issue of wars and violence in the Old Testament had been taken by opponents as evidence against the morality of Yahweh. Slandering phrases ranging from “a monstrous deity” to “blood-thirsty and war-mongering god” had been levied against Yahweh.
Those who refer to themselves as Christians, from the turn of the first to the second century, who also were bothered by these issues decided to go for an hyper-radical solution by disavowing Yahweh (whom they refer to as the Old Testament God) as the true Deity. Bending the authentic Christian faith to their polytheistic beliefs, they saw another opportunity to create tension between Jesus and the God of the Old Testament.
